The GMP Karate & Kickboxing Team was formed by Sergeant Stuart Charlesworth and Inspector Melita Worswick in 2007. The club was started by the officers who wanted to train for the sake of training, and to get away from all the politics, and ‘money orientated’ organisations that are out there. They wanted a club where new ideas were welcomed, and like-minded martial artists could train and pass on their own skills, no matter what martial art they practised. Our current training programme consists of Traditional Karate and Kickboxing, and we also incorporate Chinese Kung Fu. We have four instructors who are all Dan Grades (black belt) .

In 2008, the club invited
Andy Morrell (President C.M.A.A.) to come down and take a training session. Following a two-hour session and looking at what Cobra could offer as an Association, the GMP team joined Cobra Martial Arts Association (www.cmaa.co.uk) and have remained members since.

In November 2008, the team hosted a world record attempt for continually training in martial arts for 36hrs. This was also a charity event which raised almost £3000 for the charity CLIC Sargent, which helps children and young people who have been diagnosed with cancer. The C.M.A.A. played a major role in this event.

In June 2009, the club started training every Monday night at Grey Mare Lane Police Station and put together a grading syllabus based around the clubs training. We keep our costs to an absolute minimum, with a mat fee of £3 for non-Sports and Social members, £2 for Sports and Social members and £1 a child. Any monies raised go straight back into the club. We can genuinely say that we are a non-profit organisation.
It is the aim of the club to positively promote both
Martial Arts and the Police Service.
