29.07.08 - Confusing Answers - a Warning

One of our members recently emailed another well-known Martial Arts Group enquiring about insurance for a forthcoming amateur tournament they are to host.

The question was simply:
As non members of your group are we insured to take part in your event?”

The answer received back was
Yes, as long as you belong to the Governing Body in your Country”.

The above statement is miss-leading and means absolutely nothing, in effect it is answering a question without answering and should not be accepted as evidence of insurance cover for ‘open tournaments’.

There are only two answers to the above question, one being “
no you have to arrange your own” or a straightforward answer of “yes”. In this case you should ALWAYS ask the name of the Insurance Company providing the cover and by this we do not mean the name of the Martial Arts Group hosting the event.

17.07.08 - World Record Attempt by Police Karate Club

On Friday 21st November 2008, the Greater Manchester Police Karate Team are organising and taking part in a charity Martial Arts Marathon. The event will start at 8am on the Friday and run through to 8pm on Saturday 22nd November, a total of 36hrs.

The charity the team is trying to raise money for is Clic Sargant (charity reference 1107328), which is a charity for children who have been diagnosed with cancer. In addition to this, they will be trying to break the current
Guinness World Record for continuous training in martial arts.

The events organisers, Melita Worswick, Stuart Charlesworth and Chris Gill, are now looking for anyone who would like to help them achieve this by taking a training session during the event. As the event is a martial arts marathon, it is not limited to karate and instructors from any style are welcome.

Andrew Morrell will be teaching for 6 hours during the event from 2pm to 8pm on Saturday free of charge (donations to the charity on the day). The kicking and flexibiity course, scheduled for Saturday 22nd November, will be now be taught at this event along with a 3 hour locking course.

They are also looking for people who would like to take part in the event, either going for the 36hrs, or simply joining in whenever they can. There is however, a limit of 20 places for the actual record attempt so if you want to train for the full event, you need to let them know as soon as. If you don’t wish to train but would like to get involved, there are other things you can do to help out including being an ‘expert witness’, to verify what is being taught at a particular session.

If you would like further information about the event, please contact Stuart direct at
Stuart.Charlesworth@gmp.police.uk

04.07.08 - Success for Tiger Martial Arts Sensei Michelle Holt

Submitted by Sensei Paul Holt: -

Michelle Holt, 5th Dan, has just returned from Turkey where she fought in the Turkish Open Judo Championships Under 70 kilo weight group and won silver.

Her first fight was against the Turkish champion, Esin Taskaya. After receiving two three point penalties for no apparent reason from the partisan referee she determined she had to be more decisive and immediately threw Esin for Ippon with Kata-ashi-dori

Her second fight was aganst Giedre Sileikaite from Lithuania, bronze medallist in the Under 78 kilos at the European Judo Union “A” tournament. Michelle won by submission strangle using Hadaka-jime.

Her third fight was against Anastasia Gubadova from Russia, 5th place in the World Cup and Silver in the Sarajevo Open, both at u78 kilos. Michelle doesn’t remember exactly how she won but remembers having to stop a very powerful over the top grip that she countered with a throw to win.

The final was against  Gaelle Possamai from France, Silver at the Swedish Open and Gold at the Basancon Open. It was a very tough fight that lasted the full five minutes. Michelle went ahead early with a small Koka throw but Gaelle came back later in the fight to score Yuko. So Michelle lost by five points to three to earn a very much deserved second place.

Paul Holt, Sensei Tiger Martial Arts.

02.07.08 - Success for Shinsei Martial Arts Club - Huyton

Submitted by Sensei John Bell: -

Shinsei Martial Arts Club entered a charity open event in St Helens last Sunday.
We took 12 competitors and came away with two trophies. Sam Jenkins got through to the under 10's kata final and came 3rd, Jack Harmon lost in the semi's in the same event. Both of the lads were in amongst 40 kids so it was a great achievement. Ashleigh Bell (my daughter) came joint 3rd in the girls 12 - 13 kumite, narrowly beaten in the semi's.....

The rest of the clan did really well too.....Heather Kilpatrick beat a Dan grade and a 1st kyu on the way through to the quarter final of the girls kata were she narrowly lost, not bad for a 6th kyu!. For the majority of the rest of the team it was their very first competition. We had 4 9th kyu's, 1 7th kyu and a 5th kyu in the mens kumite and team events....all did well but went out in the first round.....but...they all now have the bug!

Each one fought a Dan grade in their respective fights, Howard Jenkins (5th kyu) scoring a brilliant chudan mawashi-geri on a Go Ju-Ryu Dan grade, but lost on two other waza-ari points.

All in all a really good day and all are now itching to get to the next one....

Regards.

John Bell , Shinsei

29.06.08 - CRB Annual Research Report

'As a result of CRB checks over the past 4 years around 80,000 unsuitable people have been prevented from gaining access to children and the vulnerable.

Three quarters of those were due to theft or violence.'

The above just goes to show how valuable CRB / Disclosure Scotland checks are and reiterates the need for new Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) that will go live in October 2009 making it law for everyone working with the young and / or vulnerable to be checked / registered.

20.05.08 - New C.M.A.A. Full Contact Champions

Submitted by C.M.A.A. Vice President Gordon Scott Russell, 6th Dan (Full Contact Link)

Well done to all E.F.K.K.I and GSR Fight Team members that took part in the joint show between the C.M.A.A. SCOTLAND & W.K.A. (SCOTLAND) on Saturday 17th May.
All E.F.K.K.I. members did them-selves proud with their display of semi-contact kick-boxing in the ring and should be proud of the way they conducted them-selves with regards to manners and discipline.

Also up for grabs on the show were two junior C.M.A.A. ring sports title belts in the 11-13 section was Kimberley Peat -v- Louise Fell. This was a hard fought fight where Kimberley had to pull out all the stops as Louise, from Rivals gym, has beaten her before.
In the end victory went to GSR Fight Team and Kimberly Peat crowned as the new C.M.A.A. Ring Sports British Champion.

Next up was Cheryl Campbell from GSR Fight Team -v- Caitlin Reily, from Rivals gym, for the 14-15 ring sports title belt. This was a good action packed fight in which Caitlin had to push forward as Cheryl had beaten her before, but in a close fought match the victory once again went to Cheryl Campbell from GSR Fight Team as the new British Champion

Well done to Callum McFadden who was beaten by Dean Ford for the British Title in the 11-13 boys division, well done to Dean of Rivals gym

At the end of the year these two girls are looking to defend their belts against two English fighters, so any C.M.A.A. members interested should get in touch .
gsr@cmaa.co.uk

Many thanks go out to Stuart Allen of WKA (Scotland & Rivals Gym) for an excellent novice show.

Also later in the year Shane Davies (WKA Scottish Semi-Contact Champion & S.K.B.F. Champion of the GSR Fight Team) will fight Jamie McLelland of the Cobra Martial Arts club in Livingston Scotland for the 14-15 C.M.A.A. British semi-Contact title Belt.

Details of the ISA have now been added to our own Disclosure website:
www.disclosure.me.uk

05.04.08 - Independent Safeguarding Authority

Today, the Home Office announced that from 12 October 2009 individuals will need to register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) if they are to work or volunteer with children and/or vulnerable adults. This of course includes Martial Arts Instructors.

The cost for an individual to apply to register with the ISA will be a one-off, lifetime fee of £64.00. An individual’s ISA-registration status will be checkable online or as part of an Enhanced CRB check. As a registered body the C.M.A.A. will be able to provide access to ISA registration for our members once the new laws come into force next year. All existing members will have 5 years from the launch date to register with the ISA. This will be done as part of their next CRB re-check after the launch date.

The ISA will assess Criminal Convictions and ban the most dangerous people from having access to or working with children and vulnerable adults’. This will also replace the current government lists of those banned from working with children and the vulnerable (List 99, POVA and POCA).

Updates will be posted on this newspage as we receive them from the CRB and the ISA.
