This is a direct comparison between the standards and ethics laid down by the UKCC Club Coach / Instructor award and the Matial Arts Instructor UK training programme. The UKCC states that Club Coaches / Instructors must all teach their respective sport in the same way. Within the Martial Arts this is not practical due to the many varied styles that make up the Traditional Arts and indeed the diversity of the Freestyle & Modern Arts.

However Instructors do require extra knowledge, aside from the skills gained during training upto Black Belt and beyond, in order to deliver safe effective, efficient and child friendly lessons. As such a part of the UKCC requires Club Coaches / Instructors to hold knowledge in the following areas. We have shown how this compares to Martial Arts Instructor UK: -

UKCC - Safe and ethical coaching pratice
Matial Arts Instructor UK - Risk management / assessment along with health and safety training and codes of ethics are covered in both the training manual and on the training course as well as being a part the written exam for Level 1 which Candidates must pass with a score in excess of 85%

UKCC - The welfare of participants during coaching sessions and within the coaching environment
Matial Arts Instructor UK - Duty of care and child protection are covered in both the training manual and on the training course as well as being a part the written exam for Level 1. The child protection policy can also be viewed on the C.M.A.A. website, is included in the training manual and is updated at regular intervals in line with the Child Protection in Sport Unit guidelines

UKCC - The types of communication and methods of communication to establish effective working relationships with participents and others
Matial Arts Instructor UK - Effective communication skills are covered in both the training manual and on the training course as well as being a part the written exam for Level 1.

UKCC - Managing the coaching environment to encourage behaviour and practice that supports the safe and effective development of participents
Matial Arts Instructor UK - Task agreements, codes of ethics and team work are all covered in both the training manual and on the training course as well as being a part the written exam for Level 1.

UKCC - The types of information and sources of information required to inform the planning of coaching sessions
Matial Arts Instructor UK - Lesson plans schedules and information are included in the training manual. Candidates are then assessed using the forms provided and given written feedback from the Instructor / Assessor over a period of time as they progress through the 3 Levels within this programme

UKCC - Dealing with injuries and illness, health and safety requirements and emergency procedures associated with coaching sessions
Matial Arts Instructor UK - The action plan (IMAP) for dealing with all incidents is covered on the training course as well as being a part the written exam for Level 1. The Candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and invlovement before reaching Level 1. Evidence will be shown by way of documents (risk assessments, accident forms etc) within the Portfolio section of the training manual. The C.M.A.A. is also a registered First Aid training provider with the St John Ambulance Brigade and as such all Level 1 Instructors must undergo First Aid training every 3 years in line with current HSE requirements and as a part of their own continued professional development

UKCC - The techniques, tactical aspects and rules of sport
Matial Arts Instructor UK - This knowledge is attained during progression through the grading syllabus of the chosen Martial Art. Evidence of this is demonstrated by grade (belt) enhancement, this can take upto 4 years or more to progress from beginner to Black Belt. The C.M.A.A. also runs Refereeing courses for those members who compete, however it should be noted that this is a very small percentage of members as some Martial Arts are not competitive

UKCC - The physical fitness components of a sport and the training priciples and methods to develop participents performance
Matial Arts Instructor UK - This knowledge is attained durining progression through the grading syllabus of the chosen Martial Art. It also encouraged as a part of both accredited prior learning and continued professional developement. Asessment of this subject is carried out during the sessions planned and delivered as per the training manual for both Level 2 and 1. Detailed assessment forms are included in the training manual to show Candidates how they will be assessed thus allowing them to prepare sessions better

UKCC - Nutritional requiremenmts for healthy living and physical activity
Matial Arts Instructor UK - This knowledge is attained durining progression through the grading syllabus of the chosen Martial Art. It also encouraged as a part of both accredited prior learning and continued professional developement

UKCC - Skill acquisition, learning styles and the methods to improve learning
Matial Arts Instructor UK - This knowledge is attained durining progression through the grading syllabus of the chosen Martial Art. Evidence of this is demonstrated by grade (belt) enhancement. The subject is also covered on the training course, as a part of effective communication skills, and encouraged as a part of both accredited prior learning and continued professional developement

UKCC - The methods to modify and adapt coaching sessions to meet participants needs, abilities and stages of development
Matial Arts Instructor UK - The respect for Diversity and Equal Opportunites are covered in both the training manual and on the training course as well as being a part the written exam for Level 1.

UKCC - Sources of information and methods to evaluate coaching sessions, the coaching process and the methods to reflect and improve personal coaching practice
Matial Arts Instructor UK - This is done by way of Instructor / Assessor feedback by the completion of coaching records contained in the training manual. The training manual also contains a full explanation of the assessment criteria for all 3 Levels
